THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC AND
THE REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA

Colombia is located in the northwestern region of South America, having Venezuela and Brazil in the east, Ecuador and Peru in the south, in the north the Atlantic Ocean and in the west the Pacific Ocean. As Argentina, Colombia based its economy mainly in the agricultural industry being the largest exporter of plantain to The United States of America, and having the highest quality coffee in the world.

Colombia, like Argentina experienced a recession in the year 1999 after decades of steady growth between the years 1970 and 1998, having as a major difficulty the quite serious internal armed conflict. Nowadays The Republic of Colombia is in a long and painful recovery from the crisis suffered years before and it is also in the process of a peace agreement with the different guerilla insurgencies.

Unlike Argentina, Colombia has remained an strategic ally of the United States of America without leaving behind the other partners such as Venezuela and Peru which are one of the main export destinations of the country. Argentina, on the other hand, because of its left hand operation has decreased the relationship with the U.S.A. and increased its attention to the southern market with the bloc Mercosur.

Despite the successful past of Argentina, both countries had experienced a meltdown in the system because of the mistakes their governors had made in the past. Argentina has recovered faster form its crisis because of the well managed economy and structure they had when they were a South American power. Nonetheless, Argentina did not have the armed conflict that has Colombia which has enlarged the recovering process.

In my opinion, Colombia should keep doing what it has been doing in order to reestablish the order in the country without forgetting the foreign relationships that would help grow its economy. On the other hand, even though Argentina has had a remarkable come back, this country should consider having more allies different than those from Mercosur in order to improve its economy based on export-import goods.

THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC

The Argentine Republic is located in South America, between the Andes Mountain Range in the west and the Southern Atlantic Ocean in the east and south, it is surrounded by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast and Chile in the west and south. After Brazil, Argentina is the second in size in the continent and the number eighth in the world. Because of its location, Argentina is subject to a variety of climates with extremes ranging from subtropical in the north to sub polar in the far south.

Over the years Argentina has been a quite successful Latin-American country with an export oriented agricultural sector, a highly literate population, a wide variety of natural resources and a diversified industrial base among other things. In terms of foreign relations, Argentina has been over the years an Ally of the United States of America and is a member of Mercosur, an international bloc composed of Brazil, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina with five associate member without full voting rights such as Colombia, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. However, since the last presidential election, the relationship between The Argentine Republic and the United States of America has diminished because Argentina has been emphasizing Mercosur as its first international priority.

Argentina has been known as one of the most modern countries in Latin-America, with metropolitan cities such as Buenos Aires and Cordoba, a transportation network that was one of the largest in the world at over 40.000 kilometers in tracks and a wide extension of waterways, for instance Rio de la Plata. Nevertheless, all the pros that were mention earlier are in jeopardy due to the 2001 crisis that cause a breakdown in the system after the trade liberalization, deregulation and privatization.

To sum up, Argentina has been consider as one of the great powers of South American countries because of its well organized system and its strong economy. Even though Argentina suffered a considerable crisis in the past that left the country in a considerable poverty, all the advantages that this country has helped it to get back on track with the careful spending control of taxes on then-soaring exports, and that is what all the other countries should take as an example in order to have an strong economy.
